Tutoring requires the tutor to follow several steps or rules when helping a writer with his or her work. These steps can help the writing session and can cause the writer to become a better writer.
- Do focus on the writer's main thesis of his or her work. It is important to focus on this in order to create a clear paper. This, along with development, structure, organization and tone of the paper, are considered high order concerns.
- Don't focus on grammatical and spelling errors. Theses are considered low order concerns and shouldn't be a top priority. This also includes punctuation and sentence structure.
- Do work together with your tutee. Collaborate together to bring ideas to the table to create a better paper. Doing so can help the writer come up with thoughts of their own and make the paper more personal.
- Don't do the work for them. Usurping ownership of the paper can result in the writer not learning from their mistakes and unable to learn how to come up with ideas of their own. This also makes the paper feel impersonal.
- Do be prepared. This includes being mentally prepared and being there on time. Showing that you want to be there can help influence the writer to become more active in the session.
- Don't act uninterested. A person's body language can show whether a person is interested or not.
